What Does Fairmined Mean?
Fairmined is an environmentally-conscious initiative that certifies gold as being of responsible origin and source. This label guarantees that the gold is traceable and that it has been extracted using the best, least damaging mining practices that help to protect and preserve the environment. Not only does this look after our planet, but it also looks after and helps to develop artisan and small-scale mining communities around the world.
In addition to receiving a fair price for the gold they mine, the miners also get a premium, which enables them to continue to develop and improve their mining activity whilst also ensuring they are well looked after. This premium is invested into a variety of areas, including miner's welfare, the development and well-being of the local community, environmental preservation and the improvement of mining organisations. By looking after mining communities, not only do we have access to more environmentally-friendly gold, but we are aiding the development of small-scale organisations rather than investing in larger companies that use damaging extraction processes. The Fairmined certification guarantees that all gold mined has been 'extracted in harmony with nature, human dignity and sustainable development, contributing to the transformation of lives in these mining communities' (Fairmined.org).
The Fairmined Standard:
The two main focal points of the Fairmined Standard are traceability and assurance. This way, they can ensure that the gold really is Fairmined! The Fairmined Standard also ensures artisan and small-scale mining organisations are adhering to the legal formalities surrounding mining practices, health and safety, labour conditions, socioeconomic development and environmental protection. Fairmined has developed this Standard for gold and associated precious metals to ensure sustainable development and protectors for the mining community and the planet. The Fairmined Supply Chain & Assurance:
The Fairmined supply chain is quite simple; the materials are mined by certified mining organisations before being transported to Fairmined suppliers. These are the people who refine, trade, manufacture and cast the precious materials for use in a variety of sectors, such as jewellery, alloy production and casting grain. This is then passed on to Fairmined licensees, who are certified to trade the gold or other precious materials. By keeping thing simple, Fairmined are able to guarantee a faultless assurance system that ensures unmatched credibility and consistency.
